Installment #5: White Mantel Reveal!

12 Oct

Sorry for the delay but it was a lonnng weekend - every bit of it worth it though for THIS!

Creating a White Fireplace Mantel

The white mantle is done.  Wow, such a tiny area was deceiving to paint - but I wanted to do it right (i.e. primer and two coats!) I brainstormed with blue tape and picked out the trim for the "picture frames" at Home Depot ...lots of choices but went basic.  Trim went up, then sanding, taping and priming before the two coats of semi gloss white.  All those little crevices in the wood trim and the rosettes were the most time consuming part - at least I was in the family room and had lots on the DVR!

Money Saver: Wanted to use the existing oak portion instead of ripping it out and installing a piece that wrapped around. Instead installed trim around the columns to give me an artificial place to stop the white paint!

Primer on the Mantel

As I type this I am exercising RESTRAINT - I want to hold off at least a week before putting  up any objects until the tackiness of the paint is all gone. But couldn't resist testing a tiny bit with some fall accessories!

  Mantel Renovation Complete

YEAH! One last quick before and after!

Costs:  handyman for one hour, $20 worth of wood trim, and $50 worth of paint.  The biggest cost was as usual in my aching back but I think it makes a huge difference in the room! And strides in my mini living room re-do! Signing off to sit on the couch and stare...*happy sigh*.

Installment #4: White Fireplace Mantel in a Weekend?

8 Oct

When I first bought this apartment I FELL in love with the tall ceilings, great fireplace and columns!
Fireplace Renovation

Over the years I have also had a ton of fun decorating the deep mantel, especially for holidays...

Fireplace Decorated for Fall

But during this mini living re-do something has been eating away at me...What is it? I said I was NOT painting the walls (now you can see why) for sanity's sake.  I am ok with the mossy green for now. So what is it?  Finally in hit me the other day...I WANT A WHITE MANTEL!!

WEEKEND MISSION:
The builder put a nice big piece of oak up there without any surround. Maybe the columns threw him?  Purchasing an entirely new mantel/surround when I have the top piece seems like a waste of perfectly good materials AND money. So here's my ingenious plan.  Have my handyman come over and cut and affix wood trim in the form of "picture frames" on the sides and across the top. Then I will sand and paint the whole thing white giving the illusion of a big white mantel.  IN MY HEAD this is so coming together...Cross your fingers for Monday's installment!  :)

Installment #2: Living Room Re-Do

28 Sep

Recent developments: Fabulous progress on a couch, obstacles encountered zero.

Couch.  I know what I love.  I blame my mother.  She taught me to appreciate fine furniture and now I can sadly sniff out the most expensive thing in the store and go home depressed. So major victory here. I went on a manhunt to all the places you can think of. Wasn't trying to be miserly since it is a couch and a main piece of furniture in the room, but a ridiculous deal presented itself. A reminder of the inspiration (and their pr$ce tag$)....

{Inspiration Couches from Jayson Home and Garden}

Am proud to say that I trusted two friends that said I should check out in Value City Furniture.  I realized quickly one would have to weave your way around some "interesting" pieces but at the same time some  of the lines were fantastic. On clearance, with a boo-boo on one side of the piping, I found this couch with great potential.  Don't be afraid to negotiate! They took another $100 off and the final tab was equivalent to getting one of the above for 80% off! She is even a bit more comfy and inviting than the inspiration pieces. After a delicate job with some pins and a staple gun she is looking perfect and sitting in the living room.

The Infamous Wedding Candy Bar…Brought to your Home…

16 Jul

Candy Bars and Dessert Tables at weddings are still getting big play. So why not do it for your next cocktail party, kids birthday, bridal shower etc.  I LOVE them for 3 reasons:Sweet Sanity - The Wedding Candy Bar / Dessert Table

A Party Focus...When its all set up it just looks so cute! And can make classy events feel more inviting. The bar doubles as party decor as well, bringing home the almighty 'theme'.
Offer Variety... I like lots of options, but that's major work. Are you really going to make 10 desserts?  (If so please quietly exit this blog.) Get variety by using store bought candies and cookies but make it look so unique and special no one cares.
Give the people what they want...Sometimes an intricate dessert is lovely, but it's also fun to indulge in the old school stuff you deprive yourself of. I have seen a grown man go crazy over malt balls.

Pulling It Together Tips:

Vessels - Troll around for whatever you've already got. Vases, glasses, and don't be afraid of containers not typically for food. I have no idea what I'm really supposed to do with the big silver thingy above.
Color Scheme - It can come from the candies or the vessels, or a little of both.  Here I did browns and metallics using chocolate/gold candies and silver/glass vessels.  Monochromatic always works, too.
Be A Copy Cat - Amy Atlas is a Dessert Table God. Get inspiration from the glamorous setups and do it on a mini-scale! Please spin through through her PORTFOLIO GALLERY - un.real.

“Decorate Your Own Onesie” Party!

15 May

2009_05_15_onesie Ok, rarely do I get my ideas from eavesdropping while riding the elevator up to my office, but today these girls were genius - whoever you are!!  How about a Make Your Own Onesie Party?  Stop.  Thought it unique, super cute, and something to do at these Baby Showers to keep people busy. I'm thinking get plain onesies in bulk from somewhere online (or just head to American Apparel or Baby Gap) and then buy fabric markers, iron on stickers, etc?

If nothing else it must be a riot --- I don't know about your friends but if my girlfriends were making my baby's wardrobe it would be hysterical....Happy Friday!

Votives Galore!

1 May

I collect votives. Yes, they're great for soft candle lighting at your parties, but even more importantly because when not entertaining they are the PERFECT PINT SIZE CONTAINER for more things then you can imagine. AND stylish. AND usually under $5.

Whenever I run across unique ones I just buy.  If you think outside the box you'll see how useful they become.  Some ideas seen here...I keep one by the spice rack holding tooth pics, one with my jewelry holding chunky rings,  one on a desk for pushpins... They can hold your sea salt in the kitchen, your stud earrings in your closet and stamps on your desk.  Better looking then a Dixie cup, no?

Stack-Worthy

10 Feb

020808_stackingbooksEver notice every decorating mag and room reveal on HGTV involves tidy little stacks as appointments around
the room?  So I have come up with my formula:
1) Only a few books, not too high.
2) Anchor with something at the top to finish it off.
3) Colors in the same family cut down on visual noise.
And finally just my humble opinion but...
4)
Use books you love. This way you get a warm fuzzy as you pass by and remember how it inspired. Display the duds on the bookshelf. Equally good for the "next read" in your list as a friendly reminder to grab for an upcoming flight.

As you can see mine includes Twilight and New Moon. Two more to go but stalling because i don't want it to be over. OB.SESSED. I don't feel bad because all of my friends feel the same way - is there anything wrong with being 30-somethings who want Edward Cullen to take them to the movies in Forks? Like you don't.
